How fragile we are
This has been an extremely rough week at work. I bitch about (or rave when they feed us donuts) the place enough, but honestly I do love it & the people here and don't see myself leaving anytime soon.
On Monday, a coworker who was only 30 weeks pregnant delivered a 3 lb 3 oz baby boy by emergency C-section because he stopped moving & his heartrate was dangerously low. Things looked critical yesterday & we were all holding our breath, and today can sigh with relief. He's starting to gain weight and they may even take him off the ventilator today. They've determined he has no brain damage, but severe anemia that apparently was causing all the problems before.
With that sigh of relief comes tears though, as another coworker had an aneurysm yesterday morning. He's 27 with a wife & two kids, she called in hysterical and said she was in surgery. She just called back again today to tell us the doctors have declared him brain dead today and are discussing organ donation with her.
All of us are rather morose & working on autopilot. Our department is huge, but close-knit and last summer while I was out on leave we lost several employees who were young to unexpected deaths, plus there was the other employee whose death was ruled a suicide this spring.
Bleh.
