Playing tourist
Dec. 6th, 2004 03:47 pmIt's been far too long since we've done this in our fair city, and a brief blurb in the Times last Thursday caught my eye. What do you do when it's a lazy Sunday afternoon, 36 degrees out but not raining?

We had fun on the M/VFremont Avenue puttering around Lake Union for 45 minutes. Hardly anyone else was on board the 50 ft. ferry which was tastefully decked out for the holidays, and Captain Larry was pleased to welcome us aboard and learn we were locals coming out to see the sights. He did a little narration of Seattle's history that we caught bits of (i.e. the houseboats used to be where the lowest of the low lived), but most of the time we had to run after Kieran so we weren't paying close attention.
Kieran has always loved ferries, but none so much as this one. We were the only passengersstupid brave enough to venture outside in the cold & wind, but he had to explore every part of the boat. Normally he hates hats and flings them off instantly, but didn't put up any fuss when we told him he could only go out with his hat on.
We were intrigued by the description of chocolate root beer floats & got one despite the cold. OMG yum, the root beer tastes like a cross between a Tootsie Roll & Rolo after the ice cream melts a bit. Kieran normally hates soda but begged for more sips of this concoction.
When we had to disembark, Kieran threw such a massive tantrum when we said we had to go now that the crew gave him a balloon in an attempt to settle him down. It didn't work, he was still whining off & on by the time we got back on the freeway. I used to love sailing as a kid, maybe someday when we have leisure time & money we'll become boat owners, even if it's just something small.
