Family rambling
May. 9th, 2005 09:17 amThis weekend involved a big transition, and one that will probably make everyone laugh that it hadn't already happened a year or so ago. Kieran has always loved his bed, a sleigh crib he moved into when he was about 4 months old after sleeping with us. He never once tried to crawl out, in fact during nap times & bedtime he often ran up to it and tried to climb in. When he wakes up, he happily sings to himself, reads a book or plays with some of his stuffed animal friends.
The crib converted to a toddler bed, but the guard rail we bought only fits twin sized mattresses. We took the side off one night and put a futon on the floor, only to find him happily curled up on it instead of his crib twice. This kid thrashes around in his sleep like you would not believe, so at the time we were reluctant to make the switch because we thought we'd find him on the floor on the other side of his bedroom.
Lately he's getting the concept that your head is supposed to stay in the general area where the pillow is.
With that, my husband dismantled the crib and we set up the futon on the floor (I got rid of the base a long time ago to save room). Kieran immediately realized it was his Big Boy Bed and curled right up in it, even though we'd only woken up a few hours earlier. He went down for naps with no problems on Saturday & Sunday, just needed an extra light and a little assurance that all was well Saturday night, and last night we left his nightlight on to go to sleep but then turned it off & left his door open and he was a happy camper all night. Yay!
See the new icon of Kieran? My husband is so sweet about making pancakes to reflect holidays and Mother's Day was no exception. Of course Kieran already thinks outside the box and moved the M's around to also be the number 3, then the letters W & E, and at one point MOM translated to EW and an O with several bites taken out of it. Oh, how I feel the love.
Kieran picked out my card himself (Garfield, of course) & made me a necklace with colored clay beads at preschool (I didn't see beforehand, the teacher wrapped it). I wore it all day, even to the zoo, and it's hanging from my window now.

Our zoo trip was kind of brief because it really started raining & Kieran was tired and cranky. He ended up being tired enough to take a three and a half hour nap... another wonderful present to me, peace & quiet! Plans to go on a picnic like we did last year for Mother's Day were obviously rained out, but my husband treated me to the KFC we would have had anyway :) Nothing fancy, but neither am I and I honestly had a great day.
On the way to the zoo we passed by the cemetery and I was very moved by how many people were visiting with bouquets for their moms buried there. It made me hug my family a little bit closer & thankful once again that I broke a promise to my grandma that resulted in her seeing her son (after over a decade) before she unexpectedly died a few months later. You just never know.
