Yesterday, the powers that be decided to place a coworker's desk on the wall outside my office. Not my first preference after years of relative quiet, but fine.

That is, until they put the return on it & I realized her chair would be directly outside my door. I'm not talking about a few feet of space between the chair & my door, but RIGHT THERE against the wall & door frame. As she worked, she & her chair blocked about half the doorway. I had visions of fires and earthquakes and being trapped to die in my office. That chair probably violates fire codes, professional office space and all feng shui laws in existance. The noisy printer parked two feet from and directly in front of the doorway wasn't helping either.

I spent most of yesterday afternoon trying to ward off the ensuing fight-or-flight claustrophobia that ended up completely overpowering me. I made numerous mistakes with my work. I sent a snarky email to a supervisor who screwed up. I sent a desperate email to meet with my boss ASAP; she was already gone for the day. After the employee left, I went over to her manager and said this situation had to change. NOW. She assured me they would move her to another wall as soon as possible, but I knew realistically it probably wouldn't be done immediately & spent most of the night dreading coming in to work today.

Then providence decided to have pity on me and smote another coworker who called in sick today. She holds down the fort on a different floor, and my boss emailled me asking if I'd come cover for her this afternoon so I would not have to be in my office at all.

Whew.
