Joining the 21st century
Jan. 28th, 2006 06:35 pmWe switched ISPs again because the combined slash in budget expenses plus (badly needed) upgrades with a DSL/DirectTV/landline package were beyond what we could have hoped for. Viva wireless! My present to myself if I get into grad school is a laptop so I can truly experience the fun. I'm sure jaws will drop at the news that my avid WoW geek & I have shared a single computer for a little over 7 years peacefully, but I know the combined demands of graduate education and portability won't allow that to continue without conflict.
What our new ISP didn't realize is that it would take one guy the entire day (9-5) to work on our setup. There was an old splitter from when the previous owner rented this place out to allow about five lines in that needed to be ripped out, then apparently there were issues with the wiring in our neighborhood. For the last hour there were two more vans & crews plus a truck with a cherry picker all working while we were freaking out inside waiting for the news that they were giving up & there'd be no DSL for us ever because we live in a sucky place.
The kicker is the first guy's brand new construction-grade extension ladder was stolen right from the pole in front of our house since he took longer than planned at a distant switchbox. Considering we live on a minor arterial, that took some cajones. I don't even want to think about what the entire cost of all that labor was plus the ladder.
