Nine times?
Feb. 4th, 2007 08:14 pmOn this day 9 years ago, I walked into an office building for my first day on my first job in this state.
Tomorrow I'll still walk into the exact same building for work. I have held 6 jobs on 3 floors in 5 cubes or office spaces for two departments under two supervisors, with 2 of the jobs being ones I had to prove there was a permanent need for by going under a benefited contract first before getting permanent budget funding. I don't even want to think of how many people I've been direct coworkers and close interdepartmental colleagues with over this time, easily 800 and probably close to a thousand if I really think about it. The building management has changed hands twice & the nearby deli at least 4 times. We have been through very public scandals, triumphs, and devastating losses together yet I feel like Norm every time I walk around the building since everyone hails me by name with a smile even if I haven't worked with that person for years.
The greatest reward has been my ability to always set my own (sometimes very convoluted) hours including telecommuting options as needed and still receive full benefits coverage as a part time employee ranging from 50-80% as I was very ill, had a baby, finished my BA and now am in grad school full time.
It is going to be so difficult to leave this place when I do graduate and find a job in my new career. I have no clue how to not show up at that building every weekday morning, it's all I know!
