Despite our preventative work back in August, for the first time in over five and a half years of owning this house we woke up to a dead furnace & a very cold house.

Both of us immediately thought 'Well crap, guess the pilot light is out', only to read the very first line of instructions on the furnace that stated "This appliance does not have a pilot. It is equipped with an ignition device which automatically lights the burner. Do not try to light the pilot by hand."

Can you tell we've never had problems with the furnace since we had no clue a pilot light was nonexistent? While our collective memories of fathers cursing at dead furnaces & the battle of relighting the pilot light isn't quite as dramatic as A Christmas Story, it just seems so anti-climatic to follow one simple set of instructions then if that doesn't work to call for repair.

We did get it to power up again, but it's still not igniting. Our repair appointment isn't until tomorrow morning. My hope is that this is covered under the one year warranty from August since the whole reason we had the system checkup & repair work done was to prevent what happened today. They have been very fair in the past with their charges, so we'll see.

We didn't have a space heater, so a quick trip to Walgreens fixed that and we do have one warm room in the house. It could be much worse, it's supposed to be colder this weekend & I don't think PSE does repair work then! Our gas fireplaces just for show so it's pointless to fire those up. We'll probably replace them down the road with real heat conductive inserts instead of what the previous owner did of sticking gas logs in a regular fireplace. That sounds really nice right about now....
