So this is why I went beserk restocking the pantry yesterday. We'll have to see if this is a reliable barometer of our 'major' snowstorms:

...SNOW ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 11 PM THIS EVENING TO 7 AM PST TUESDAY...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN SEATTLE HAS ISSUED A SNOW ADVISORY...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 11 PM THIS EVENING TO 7 AM PST TUESDAY.

SNOWFALL TOTALS OF UP TO 2 INCHES ARE EXPECTED FROM LATE THIS EVENING THROUGH EARLY TUESDAY MORNING. THE LIGHTEST AMOUNTS WILL OCCUR TO THE SOUTH AND EAST NEAR PUYALLUP...WHILE THE HEAVIER AMOUNTS AROUND 2 INCHES ARE EXPECTED CLOSER TO PUGET SOUND AND NORTH OF SEATTLE. SNOW WILL CHANGE TO RAIN DURING THE MORNING RUSH HOUR.

A SNOW ADVISORY MEANS THAT PERIODS OF SNOW WILL CAUSE MAINLY TRAVEL DIFFICULTIES. BE PREPARED FOR SNOW COVERED ROADS AND LIMITED VISIBILITIES...AND USE CAUTION WHILE DRIVING.

It'll forever amuse me that a wimpy 2" of snow causes such a ruckus and weather forecast alerts in this city :)

So that's probably what this little red blinking Severe Weather Alert button on my weather page is all about.

It also likely explains why it was still only 36 degrees at 10 a.m. this morning.

But what is this "snow" stuff everyone keeps talking about?

I don't think this ranks as Severe, although Hood Canal is supposed to get 4-7".

You'll see soon enough, last year's winter sucked but this one is looking more promising.

It's simple really, and you don't need to hear a weather forecast:

Just go to the grocery store. If they are out of meat, milk, bread, and beer, some weatherperson said "snow".

Failing that, just look for the sideways sliding Marta bus. :)
