Not a fun morning
May. 6th, 2003 09:52 amKieran's finally had his first injury that involved a lot of blood. He's ok, taking a nap. I'm sitting here drinking a Diet Cherry Coke when I'd rather have a few shots of just about anything straight up, but somehow that doesn't seem too appropriate before 10 am when I have to work soon.
I knew it was bound to happen sooner or later since he's been mobile, but logic can't prepare you for it anyway. He tripped over his own feet while turning and wham. 10 month old mouth vs. stone hearth edge = no contest. I did not realize my heart could actually exit my body and dig a hole beneath my feet while sinking before, but I guess the sight of blood gushing out of your son's mouth & pouring down his blanket sleeper for the first time will do that.
He split his lower lip and those 3 sharp baby teeth cut into his top gum rather hard :( What surprised me was that I didn't panic, just calmly scooped him up and raced upstairs to take care of it. All bleeding stopped within 3 minutes so my assumption is the gum cut isn't too deep (it's pretty much impossible to really get a good look in a baby's mouth to begin with, let alone one who is screaming) but I'll try again to get a better look when he's awake.
My brave little guy. I know if I had a split lip and nasty gum cut I'd be cranky for a long time afterward, but within 5 minutes he was back to exploring what lies underneath the area rug while I got him a bottle. Didn't even phase him to down the entire thing either, then he settled down for a nap.
I wish I could.
