Safe mode is no longer functional and prospects of hard drive recovery are apparently slim.

Back from scratch as due to a long story of transition & 'who's on first?' between the two departments I've worked for, my files that I thought were being backed up nightly... weren't.

If it was my own computer that died & I didn't make sufficient backups it'd be one thing, but this has me pretty pissed off as I have lost very important payroll & human resources data that I have no easy way to recreate.

This may seem petty and spiteful....

.... but I would suggest that those dimwits who failed to maintain adequate backups on your system (hello? this should be funadmental in an institutional setting) have their data restored last. And, of course, until that data has been restored and properly verified (could take months, years, given your workload, you know?) you won't be able to answer basic questions like if they have any vacation or insurance benefits, nor exactly what their proper salary schedule is—but you'll be happy to open a ticket for them.

Either that or give them the option of being run through both eyes with a hot poker.

Sheesh. I feel for you, I really do.

Oh, massive ugh-ness :( I totally understand where you're coming from with the 'I'd be ok if it were my personal machine and I screwed up'. I don't even think we *do* any backups on our machines at werk...which reminds me that maybe I should start actually start moving stuff I want to be sure to not lose to my home computer via thumb key, since I actually do back up my home box.

I hope something is salvageable!!

:( That really sucks. Tim's friend John didn't touch your computer, did he?
