I finally faced the Tower-shaped hole in my heart head on with today's article confirming what I feared: another part of my hometown and heritage is dead. I knew the ones around here had closed and they'd filed for bankruptcy, but surely the Tower was ok, right?

Wrong.

Even worse, I had to call and break the news to my mom after we had just spoken a little under an hour before. She's off to our homeland next month, and last week had the idea of stopping by Tower to browse and was so excited about it. You would have thought I was calling to announce the news of the death of one of our friends when I read 'the defunct Sacramento-based retailer', but she was thankful that I didn't allow her anticipation to build further only to make a rather nasty discovery when she pulled into the parking lot.

I sound like such a nostalgic old fart, but truly I can't imagine Tower not being there. It was my first solo destination after attaining the Holy Trinity of high school: 1 - cutting class 2 - a driver's license 3 - a car. The lyric in the subject is from the album I got that early fall day that influenced way too much of my poetry and mindset over my senior year. You can laugh if you want at the artist, but if you listen to that particular album you'll hear an awful lot of me both then and now! The cafe across the street with desserts to die for opened the same year & I'm not sure how many of them I walked off while in pursuit of the perfect CD.

*sniff* at least there's still crickets in the summertime by those odd-looking Land Park streetlights...
