You may have noticed that I haven't said a whole lot about how class is going, even though the midterm is next week (already?!). This is because for the time being I'm not enjoying it too much, but it's a necessary step in laying the foundation for the course as a whole & I'm fairly optimistic that I will greatly enjoy that.

So, what are you taking? A brief summary is 'a sociology class'. The official title for it is "Historical Ambiguities and Contemporary Social Change: Confusion and conflict regarding the status and rights of American Indian tribes" It's not 'about Indians' nor is it 'about US history', but about their dynamic interaction over time.

Unfortunately part of studying a relationship like this is studying history for a while, which I have always loathed. Nonetheless, the history we have been learning since class started earlier this month is critical so we can then look at the interpretations, perspectives, etc. that I'm really interested in. I don't remember learning any of what we're studying now in US History classes, which involve major shifts in US/tribal relations & roughly summed up as 'Discovery/Conquest/Treaty-Making' (1500s to 1828), 'Removal/Relocation' (1828-1887, all I remember from previous classes was the Trail of Tears from this era), 'Allotment/Assimilation' (1887-1928), 'Reorganization/Self-Government' (1928-1945), 'Termination' (1945-1961), and 'Self-Determination' (1961-present). Loads of names, dates, legislative bills, blech.

I never do well on rote learning exams. The lack of them to date is probably why I've gotten As at UW since my grades have relied more on papers & interpretation of theories & concepts. Even worse, it's impossible for me to study in rote mode while Kieran is awake & happily running around the house. Study time is usually crammed in at night when I'm brain dead after a day of him & work, and not too productive. However, I did get a mid-range B worth 30% of my grade in my last class and still ended up with a 4.0. There may be hope yet with the midterm in this class worth 35% of my grade.

So, that's why I've been relatively quiet. That, and I know way too many pregnant women in the third trimester and am picking up on their nesting vibes so I've been cleaning out the house like crazy. My days are spent running after Kieran, working, trying to study, and tossing out 20 lbs worth of crap from the bathroom (and there isn't even all that much storage space in it). On the plus side, I found my high school graduation ring... and it was loose on my finger! Talk about an ego boost :)
